Private 8-hour Wellington tour with driver guide, visiting Parliament, Old St Pauls, the Cable Car, Weta Cave, Pukeahu and coastal memorials.

Tour Overview

This private Wellington tour gives you a full day with your own driver guide, with no mixed groups. Over about 8 hours, it brings together key city landmarks, coastal viewpoints, film culture and places of remembrance.

Begin in the central city with a walk around the Parliament grounds to see the Beehive, the Houses of Parliament and the Parliamentary Library building. At Old St Pauls Cathedral, a Heritage NZ staff member provides a guided overview of the cathedral’s history, including its links to American Marine Corps personnel based in Wellington in 1942. You will also ride the Wellington Cable Car to Kelburn and walk through the Lady Norwood Rose Garden in the Wellington Botanical Gardens, or take a short garden walk when the roses are not in bloom.

Along the waterfront, stop by the Well_ington sign and the statue of Kupe with Hine Te Apārangi and Pekahourangi. The tour also includes a scenic drive along Oriental Bay and up to Wellington’s popular lookout point for wide views over the city and harbour.

Further highlights include the Weta Cave, the memorial and tomb of William Massey and Christina Massey, the Wahine memorials at Seatoun and Breaker Bay, the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk memorial above Breaker Bay, Wellington’s first wind turbine at Brooklyn, and Pukeahu National War Memorial Park with the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. The day finishes with gelato at Zelati Dessert Cafe.

Built between 1865 and 1866 Old St Pauls Cathedral is one of the best examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the world. The Cathedral is particularly poignant for American visitors. A large contingent of the American Marine Corp were based in and around Wellington in 1942 and many Marines would attend Sunday services. The American Marine Corp flag and the American national flag of that time with 48 stars hang proudly inside the Cathedral. Here we have a guided tour with a Heritage NZ staff member who will provide an extensive overview of the history of the Cathedral.
