Guided Wellington tour visits Helm’s Deep, Mount Doom and Kaitoke Regional Park, with a Weta Workshop experience and gourmet lunch included.

Tour Overview

See Wellington through the lens of The Lord of the Rings on a tour that combines filming locations with the craft behind the films. With a Wellington local as your guide, you’ll visit places used for Helm’s Deep, Minas Tirith and Mount Doom, including a viewpoint from the top of the Taita levy, where Peter Jackson filmed close to home.

The tour also includes Kaitoke Regional Park, about 40 minutes from Wellington, in the Pakuratahi region at the head of the Te Awakairangi valley. This park was used as Rivendell in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, adding a clear link between the landscape and the world seen on screen.

At Weta Workshop in Wellington, step into the film-making process through a 90-minute experience focused on the props, costumes, creatures and models created for major productions including The Lord of the Rings and Avatar. You can also see the miniatures built for Thunderbirds Are Go! and watch a short documentary about film-making on the Miramar Peninsula. The Weta Workshop Cave shop offers collectibles, prop replicas, apparel, jewellery and books designed by Weta Workshop artists.

A gourmet lunch is included, prepared by Aaron, a French-trained chef, with local New Zealand delicacies. There is also an optional cosplay element, with the chance to dress as characters such as Gandalf or Frodo.
