Self-guided Wellington walking tour from Wellington Station to Oriental Bay via Parliament grounds and Lambton Quay, with 14 highlights over 3 to 4 hours.

Tour Overview

Explore Wellington on a self guided walking tour that moves from the city’s political centre to its waterfront edge. Starting at Wellington Station, the GPS enabled route works offline and lets you set your own pace over 3 to 4 hours.

The walk takes you through Parliament grounds, where the Beehive sits alongside other major civic buildings, then into streets shaped by churches, public art, and long standing city landmarks. Stop at New Zealand’s oldest pub, built in 1840 by William Couper, a place linked with Te Rauparaha and Katherine Mansfield. Nearby, a Gothic Revival church designed by Reverend Thatcher in 1866 stands out for its native timbers, including kauri, rimu, totara, and matai.

As you continue, look for the bronze tribute to Katherine Mansfield, cut with the writer’s words, and the statue of Kupe, whose carving motifs reference Māori storytelling. The route also passes the Old Bank Arcade and the busy shops of Lambton Quay, where Wellington’s commercial history is still visible in the city centre.

The tour finishes at Oriental Bay, where the pace shifts from city streets to the waterfront. Along the way, 14 key highlights and 23 extra stops reveal Wellington’s mix of colonial history, civic identity, and everyday harbour life.
