City tour of Wellington with harbour viewpoints, Weta Cave, Te Kopahou Visitor Centre, Cable Car Museum, Rose Gardens and a wind turbine stop.

Tour Overview

See Wellington from a series of high vantage points on this city tour that combines harbour views, film connections, and local history. Along the way, your guide shares context on the capital’s setting between hills and sea, with time at several well known city landmarks.

The tour begins near the Band Rotunda, a Wellington landmark since 1938, before moving through bayside areas with painted ladies and other historic houses, including examples of Wellington’s Streamline Moderne style. A short climb of 30 steps leads to a lookout over Paradise and the city. You will also pass a site whose name came from one of the earliest ships carrying engineers and town planners from the New Zealand Company after 1840.

Film fans will stop at Peter Jackson’s restored art deco cinema and visit the Weta Cave, where you can see local cave trolls and browse the shop. Paid tours are available there if you wish to explore further.

The route continues around the coast for wide views of the capital, then heads to the south coast and the Te Kopahou Visitor Centre. There is also a chance to sample a Kiwi meat pie and local craft beer.

Your tour includes a one way trip on the Cable Car to the top, entry to the Cable Car Museum, a walk through the Rose Gardens, and a stop by one of the wind turbines that contributes to Wellington’s electricity supply.
