Full-day eBike ride on the Remutaka Cycle Trail from Kaitoke to Featherston, through Pakuratahi Forest and old railway tunnels, with lunch and return shuttle.

Tour Overview

This full day eBike ride follows the flagship section of the Remutaka Cycle Trail, combining rail history with a steady, easy to moderate 28km ride. After morning pickup from Wellington Port or Wellington Station, you are shuttled to Kaitoke, where the trail begins.

From Kaitoke, the route leads through the native, bird filled Pakuratahi Forest, then along the old railway line, crossing bridges and passing through tunnels. Information stations along the way explain the scale of the original Fell railway system, a New Zealand first at the time and one of only a few of its kind in the world. The ride is suited to a range of confidence levels, especially those who want time to cruise and take in the surroundings.

At the summit, you stop for a picnic lunch on a grassy plateau beside the remains of a historic station. The afternoon brings a long descent to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa, controllable and enjoyable, with open views across farming country.

The day finishes with pickup from The Royal Hotel in Featherston and a return shuttle over the Remutaka ranges and down the Hutt Valley to Wellington. Transport, eBike hire, trunk bags, and food are included, so you only need to dress for the conditions and be ready to ride.

    Remutaka Rail Trail - Kaitoke

Start point for the 28km ride, recommended for those less confident or wanting to cruise and take their time. On the trail, you’ll start by cycling through the native bird-filled Pakuratahi Forest. Follow an old railway line over bridges and through tunnels, while pausing, if you like, to check out information stations detailing the enormous task of constructing the “Fell” railway system - a first for New Zealand at the time, and one of only a few around the world. Once you reach the summit, you will stop for a picnic lunch on a large grassy plateau next to the remnants of a historic station. After lunch, enjoy an exhilarating (but easily controllable!) descent to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa, with views of some of New Zealand’s stunning farming heartland.
